Stairs named Phillies hitting coach

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Phillies have hired Matt Stairs to be their new hitting coach.

The announcement was made on Wednesday.

Stairs, 48, played parts of 19 seasons in the major leagues with 12 different franchises, including the 2008 World Series champion Phillies. He spent the past three seasons as an analyst on the team’s television broadcasts.

This is the first coaching job for Stairs, who played for the Chunichi Dragons in 1993, at the professional level.
