Leicester Riders head coach Rob Paternostro will rest key players for the play-offs if Newcastle clinch top spot in the British Basketball League.

Riders are guaranteed second place after Tuesday's 66-63 win over Worcester Wolves, their eighth game in 16 days.

But Newcastle will finish top if they beat Manchester Giants on Wednesday.

Paternostro said: "If Newcastle win we cannot get first, so we will make sure everyone's rested."

Leicester end the regular season at Worcester on Friday, but will be involved in the play-off quarter-finals which begin on 24 April.

He added: "If we were playing once a week, we would maybe play it out.

"But when you are playing all of these games, these guys need a break."
