The Knicks reportedly are a heavy favorite to land free-agent forward Greg Monroe this summer.
Of course, the team cannot officially sign the 6-11 Pistons center/forward until the free agent signing period opens July 8. In fact, teams cannot even begin negotiating with free agents until July 1; to do so before then invites charges of tampering.
Yet the reported Saturday that a league executive said Monroe to the Knicks is "about as close to a done deal as you can get."
It’s been rumored that team president Phil Jackson has made Monroe his No. 1 free agent target, a desire the Daily News calls "maybe the worst-kept secret in the NBA." Jackson could be helped in his quest by his long-term relationship with Monroe’s agent, David Falk.
The 24-year-old Monroe has posted 16.1 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season, both career highs.
Whether the Knicks target Monroe or someone else, the team has plenty of , more than $30 million. Any move is likely to be an improvement for a team that is currently 16-64, tied for the worst record in the NBA.
